Reconstruction Options - Finding What's "Just Right" for You
Understanding your choices after mastectomy
Insights for Empowerment
When I learned I needed a mastectomy, I was presented with the usual options: go flat, get implants, or have a big flap surgery.
None of those felt right for me.
I didn’t want implants. I wasn’t comfortable with long surgeries and bigger scars. I even started preparing myself to go flat because I thought that was my only option.
Then I heard about the Goldilocks procedure...almost by accident.
And suddenly, it was like someone turned on a light. It was exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for. It was perfect for me.
Your Reconstruction Options
Going Flat (No Reconstruction) Some women choose not to reconstruct at all. This is a valid, beautiful choice. No additional surgeries. No implants. Just healing and moving forward.
Implants Silicone or saline implants placed under chest muscle. Shorter surgery, but requires maintenance and eventual replacement.
Flap Surgery (DIEP, TRAM, Latissimus) Tissue taken from belly, back, or thighs to rebuild breasts. Longer surgery, more recovery, but uses your own tissue.
Goldilocks Procedure Using the skin and fatty tissue that’s already there, surgeons fold and shape it into breast mounds. Shorter surgery than flaps. All your own tissue. Smaller results, but natural.
My Goldilocks Story
The Goldilocks procedure was just right for me because:
I avoided implants and foreign materials
Surgery and recovery were shorter than flap procedures
It’s all my own tissue
I have shape under clothes
Things to know:
My breasts are smaller than before
Less fullness than implants would give
I have scars (though they’ve softened)
Not everyone is a candidate
What I Wish I’d Known
Recovery includes stiffness, numbness, and emotional adjustment. Looking in the mirror was hard at first. But I’m learning to love this body that fought for me.
Making Your Choice
Talk to a plastic surgeon experienced in ALL reconstruction methods. Ask every question. Get second opinions. This is YOUR body. Your choice.
You deserve care that fits you.
Conclusion
I’m sharing this because no one mentioned Goldilocks to me until I demanded other options. I want you to know it exists. Because knowing your options is power.
