Self-Care During and After Treatment
How to care for yourself when your body has been through war
Insights for Empowerment
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s survival.
When you’re going through cancer treatment, your body is under attack from both the disease and the treatment. You need rest. You need nourishment. You need grace.
Here’s what helped me.
Physical Self-Care
Rest without guilt: Your body is healing. Sleep when you’re tired. Rest when you need to. Don’t apologize for it.
Gentle movement: Walking, stretching, yoga. Movement helps, but don’t push too hard.
Nourish your body: Eat what you can. Stay hydrated. Some days that’s all you can do.
Manage side effects: Don’t suffer in silence. Tell your medical team what you’re experiencing.
Emotional Self-Care
Let yourself feel: Sad, angry, scared, relieved—all of it is valid.
Therapy helps: A counselor who specializes in cancer patients can make a huge difference.
Journaling: Writing through it helped me process what I couldn’t say out loud.
Limit negativity: Protect your peace. You don’t owe anyone access to your space during this time.
Spiritual Self-Care
Prayer and meditation: Staying connected to God was my anchor.
Gratitude practice: Even on hard days, finding one thing to be grateful for helped.
Faith community: Letting people pray for me and with me carried me through.
Practical Self-Care
Accept help: When people offer, say yes. Let them bring meals, clean, drive you places.
Simplify: Life doesn’t have to be perfect. Do what matters, let the rest go.
Set boundaries: Say no to things that drain you.
Conclusion
Self-care looks different for everyone. Find what nourishes you—body, mind, and spirit—and do more of that.
You’re not just surviving. You’re healing. And healing requires care.
