What Does Faith Look Like?
Walking Through With Faith and Wisdom
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1
People often ask, “What does faith look like?” It’s a question that sounds simple but is hard to explain—because faith is not something you measure, it’s something you live.
Insights for Empowerment
I have faced fear head on many times, but nothing compared to the day I heard the words, “You have breast cancer.”
I immediately trembled in fear. My body shook, my thoughts raced, and for a moment, it felt like the ground beneath me was gone. But then, in the midst of that storm, I heard the Lord clearly say:
“This is not unto death.”
He also told me: “How you go through this will determine how you come out of this.”
Those words became my anchor. I chose, right then, to grab hold of what God said—not my fear. It wasn’t easy. There were days of hurt and pain, and moments where my thinking drifted in the wrong direction. But every time fear tried to rise, prayer rose higher.
Romans 12:3 reminds us that God has given each of us “the measure of faith.” That means we already have what we need. Faith is not about how much—it’s about what we believe and how we live it out.
When Faith Met Fear
Looking back, I don’t see a woman who never felt fear—I see a woman who chose to believe God’s voice above her circumstances.
When I say I chose God’s word over the doctor’s report, let me be clear: that didn’t mean ignoring medical advice. I had surgery. I took the medications. I followed the treatment plan. But through it all, I held onto the truth that the doctor’s report gave me facts, while God’s word gave me truth.
The facts said “cancer.” God’s word said, “This is not unto death.”
The facts said uncertainty. God’s word said, “Fear not, for I am with you.”
That’s what it meant to choose faith. It was not walking aimlessly or recklessly. It was walking with wisdom, doing what was needed, but refusing to let fear or a diagnosis have the final word.
Faith and Wisdom Together
Here’s how I came to understand it:
Placing God’s authority above all else. Doctors can give facts, but God has the final say.
Trusting that healing comes through Him—sometimes through prayer, sometimes through medicine, sometimes through miracles.
Walking in both faith and wisdom. Taking the treatments, surgeries, or medications is not a lack of faith; it’s often part of how God works things together for our good.
Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” That scripture carried me. Faith didn’t erase my fear, but it gave me the courage to keep moving forward. And it reminded me that how I went through this storm would determine how I came out of it.
My Lessons in Faith
Faith is not about quantity—it’s about choice. You already have faith. The question is: will you choose to believe God’s word over fear?
Fear may shake you, but it doesn’t have to define you. Faith gives you something greater to hold onto.
How you go through determines how you come out. Your response matters more than your circumstances.
Prayer fuels faith. When wrong thoughts creep in, prayer restores your focus and gives you strength.
Faith works alongside wisdom. Trust God fully while honoring the steps He provides through doctors, treatments, and care.
Conclusion
When people ask me what faith looks like, my answer is this: Faith looks like holding onto God’s word when fear tries to take over. It looks like believing Him in the middle of pain and uncertainty. It looks like walking through the storm knowing you will not be consumed.
Encouraging Nuggets
You don’t need more faith—you need to believe in the faith you already have.
Faith is not the absence of fear—it’s the decision to believe God anyway.
Fear speaks loudly, but God’s word speaks louder.
